New York, New York,  la película dirigida por Martin Scorsese en 1977 fue un sonado  fracaso comercial en su época, pero su canción principal (New York, New York) alcanzaría después gran fama en la versión de Frank Sinatra.

La duración original de New York, New York era de cuatro horas y media, pero Scorsese hizo  una nueva versión con "sólo" 155 minutos y, posteriormente, otra con 136 minutos.

Durante las filmaciones  Martin Scorsese se ocupó de que el elenco improvisase en diversas escenas de la película. Así, Robert De Niro debió aprender a tocar el saxofón para dar mayor veracidad a su personaje; a pesar de ello, en las correspondientes escenas sería doblado por su compañero de elenco Georgie Auld.
